The Estate Hotel

Kimberley’s history sparkles like the precious stones that were found by the ambitious and opportunistic prospectors. Belgravia, one of the town’s oldest suburbs, played a key part in the story of Kimberley’s rise to worldwide recognition. Presently, many of Belgravia’s historic homes that were the site of the exciting glamour and enterprise of the town are still standing –a testament to a time gone by.

the Estate hotel

In 1907, the red-brick home at 7 Lodge Road was designed by acclaimed architect, GW Greatbach. It was commissioned to be built by Ernest Oppenheimer as a wedding present to his bride, Mary. The address of the home made for instant status and it marked the couple as financially successful and influential. Oppenheimer was a diamond trader, and his two sons were born at Lodge Road. In 1912, Oppenheimer’s standing led him to become first ever Mayor of Kimberley and he served three consecutive terms.

The First World War meant that the family’s German Jewish roots put them in danger, and when threats were made to burn down the house, Oppenheimer resigned as mayor and his family left Kimberley. Many years later, the historic house was opened as a hotel. It has been declared a national monument, and once you have entered its hallowed halls, you will understand why. The large veranda, extensive library and five elegantly decorated rooms make for an enjoyable stay while the pool is available for cooling down in the intense heat.

Butlers Restaurant

Butler’s Restaurant buttresses the boutique hotel and has garnered praise for its gourmet South African and French-influenced menu that evolves to ensure a unique dining experience. Butler’s is known for sourcing organic and home-grown or locally-grown ingredients that are fresh and of a high standard –maintaining their status as the best restaurant in Kimberley. The specialties are the springbok carpaccio, gourmet steak and the duck.

While Kimberley may have evolved into a more tranquil town, the Estate Hotel remains a symbol of the fantastic times that have passed, and allows you to experience delectable food and charming hospitality as you travel on your Rovos Rail journey.
